Activity:

We started our new terms weekly activity by asking the children if they knew what rhyming words were. We gave them some examples and listened to examples given by the children. Then we talked about nursery rhymes e.g. '1, 2, 3, 4, 5, once I caught a fish alive', 'Row row row your boat' and '5 little monkeys jumping on the bed' and highlighted the rhyming words in each nursery rhyme.

After the children had understood what rhyming words were, we introduced them to our new forest school song which we all had lots of fun singing:

Forest School is lots of fun!

Playing in the rain or sun.

Building dens and climbing trees.

Seeing flowers that make you sneeze.

Watching bugs creep and crawl.

Are they big or are they small?

Forest School is lots of fun!

Playing in the rain or sun.

At the same time as singing the song, we held up picture cards showing what rhyming word was being sung at the time to help them memorize the rhyming words and therefore the song.

Some of the children went on to make their own rhyming sentence cards and then decorated them as you can see in the pictures.

Home Activity:

Show your child a few pictures of rhyming words and ask them to form a sentence using them. For older children who want to practice their writing, ask them to write their own rhyming words and then try to write them in a sentence or perhaps even write their own poem or nursery rhyme!
