Activity:
Spoty Hat needed another woodland friend to help him out so he asked the children to make Owl to help him this week.
To start the children needed to saw a slim section from a thick branch of wood to make owls body. This required the children to use the workbench to secure a thick branch, turning both handles clockwise to secure it. They then used a regular saw or a bow saw to cut a slim disc from the branch. They then swapped the thick branch for a much thinner branch and used a finer tenon saw to cut two eye discs. They used a claw hammer to hammer the eye discs onto the body with short nails and then used a palm drill to make a hole above the eyes to enable them to thread some wool through to hang it from. It was then time to decorate their owls using leaves (for wings and beaks), glitter, fluffy balls, feathers and anything else they could think of.
We talked about nocturnal animals and asked the children to try to think of some other creatures that slept in the daytime and became active at night. Badgers, bats and hedgehogs were some of their excellent suggestions. We also talked about what sounds owls made and the children did some excellent terwit terwooing!
Home Activity:
Using either reference books or the internet, look up different types of owl with your child. Find out what they look like, what they eat and what different sounds they make.
