Activity:
This week we decided to undertake a slightly more advanced group activity and challenged the children to make a wooden birdhouse. We thought it would be very interesting to see what kind of birds it attracted, when finished.
We started by discussing our birdhouse design, what type of wood we would use, how we would assemble it and what tools would be required. We decided that we would try and make a traditional rectangular shaped birdhouse with a diamond shaped entrance. The children could then paint it in bright colours. We would need to use a saw to cut the wood to size and some nails and a hammer to attach the panels together. We would also need some hooks in the top to attach some twine in order to hang it from a tree.
Once we had cut the wood to size, the children used a hammer to hammer in some nails to attach all of the panels together. They screwed in some hooks on the top to attach the twine and then painted it.
We talked about different kinds of birds and what birds we could identify around the site.
Home Activity:
If you have an outside area, try to encourage birds to visit and feed by making a fat ball and then try to identify what birds they are either by looking in a book or online.
