Activity:
The activity for this week started with the children taking some modeling clay, rolling it into a ball and then flattening it into a rough disc shape either using their hands or with an object such as a stick for a rolling pin. They looked for mainly natural materials (with the exception of the odd mini-pom-pom) to stick into the clay to make their mosaic. They could use twigs, feathers, leaves, stones, seeds or anything else they wanted to create their mosaics. After they were completed, they were put to one side to let the clay air dry.
This activity encouraged the children to talk and get excited about their favorite things and to try to create an impression of them using clay and various materials. By talking about their favorite things and listening to each other talking about themselves, it encouraged the children to communicate their likes and dislikes. It was also quite an insightful activity which allowed us to get to know a little more about the children's interests. This in turn will help us to create other activities based on what they find engaging and rewarding.
Home Activity:
Try making some more mosaic pictures using different materials: experiment with different buttons, stones, paper, ribbons, leaves. Why not try with some food items like, blueberries, sunflower seeds, peas, sweetcorn etc? You could also use different coloured and shaped lego bricks to make a pattern or picture. Please don't forget to upload a picture of any creations to Tapestry.
