Activity:

We decided to work on our literacy this week by making letters of the alphabet using only natural materials. We started by asking the children to look around the site for suitably thin sticks to make our letters with. They then used secateurs to cut the sticks to the correct size. We used cotton to tie the sticks together to form shapes that resembled letters of the alphabet. Some of the sticks naturally formed certain letters so only needed to be cut to the correct size.

We asked the children if they knew which letter of the alphabet their first name began with. We also asked them if they could think of anything else that began with the same letter. We sang the alphabet song and talked about forming simple words, phrases and sentences depending on the age of the child.

Home Activity:

Try to find objects from around your house that resemble letters of the alphabet or even make your own (lolly sticks are good for this). Ask your child if they can name 5 things beginning with the same letter as their first name or for older children, ask if they can spell simple words beginning with the first letter of the objects they've found.
