Activity:
This week we decided to make a bird feeder from natural materials. We started by using a knife to cut an orange in half. We then used the knife and a spoon to cut and scoop out the pulp of one half and cut the other half into segments. Some of the children ate the segments for their mid-morning snack so nothing went to waste. We used a small screwdriver to make two holes on either side of the orange half and looked around the site to find a suitable stick to push through the holes. Once this was done the children tied some colourful wool onto each end of their sticks to make a long loop. We filled each orange half with bird feed and wrote our names or drew a picture on them. Once our bird feeders were finished they were taken home to be hung from a branch of a tree in a garden or park.
We talked about what birds ate and where they sourced their food during the different seasons. We then discussed which seasons would be more difficult for birds to find food in and which would be easier and why. We looked at the different birds that inhabit the site and tried to identify them.
Home Activity:
Look at different birds in your local environment and try to identify them using either a reference book or online. Ask you child which is their favourite bird they've been able to identify and investigate a little more about it...
Where does it live?
What does it eat?
What are it's habits?
Is it migratory?
