Activity:

We started this weeks activity by talking about sailing boats and how they are propelled by the wind. We discussed how they use large sails as opposed to engines or oars that 'catch' the wind and push them through the water.

We asked the children to look around the site and gather some natural materials that we could use to make our sailing boats. This included finding pieces of bark to make a hull, twigs or small sticks to make a mast and leaves for the sail. We drilled one or two holes in the bark using either a palm drill or hand drill. We shaped the twigs using a knife so the end would fit snuggly into the hole(s) we drilled. We used a hole punch to make a couple of holes at opposing end of our leaves and then threaded the leaves onto the twigs to make a sail.

Home Activity:

Talk to your child about what other things use wind. Go online to show them some examples using pictures or videos. This could include things such as: windmills; kites; wind turbines; flags; wind sports, (wind powered) water pumps or even just for drying your clothes on a washing line :0)
