Weekly Activities. Week 4 - Make a Clay Creature

Description:

Use some clay and other natural materials to make an insect or creature.

Activity:

We started this weeks activity by talking about insects: what insects can you name; what do they look like; how many eyes and legs do they have; can they fly, how do they defend themselves against predators etc. We then asked the children to look around the site for natural materials they could use to make their creatures. This included twigs (for legs or antennae), small stones (for eyes or various parts of the body), leaves (for wings) and slate (for a body armour) amongst other things.

The children then moulded some clay into a head and body shape and stuck their materials on to make the other body parts. We left the clay to set hard and then stood back to admire the wonderfully inventive and imaginative creations!

Home Activity:

Instead of using clay and natural materials to make a creature, try using some things from around the home instead e.g. a section of cucumber for a body, a tomato for a head, cocktail sticks for legs and teabags for wings. Help them to engage their imagination and see what they can come up with...
