Activity:

This week the children were very excited about designing and building a den by working together as a group exercise. We asked them what they thought a den might look like or could be made from. We looked at different types of dens such as tepee dens, centrally supported dens and loose part dens. We discussed what type of den they would like to build, where they would like to build it and what materials they would need in order to make it.

We encouraged the children to work together carrying large branches, securing the tarp and tying knots. We asked them for ideas on how to test the sturdiness of individual branches as well as the completed structure and also on how to make adaptations when necessary.

After the den had been built we recapped on what the children had said a den could look like or be made from and asked what new things they had learnt about making a den.

Home Activity:

Make your own den with your child but challenge them to try using different materials and designs from what they've previously made.
