Activity:

We started this weeks activity by asking the children to choose a basic shape (e.g. triangle, square etc) and then construct a stick frame using sheer lashing or square lashing knots. They then wrapped either wool or string around the frame and through it to form a basic structure suitable for weaving.

We spoke as a group about what natural materials could be used to weave with (grass, bendy sticks, crow garlic, catkins, feathers or leaves that had fallen to the ground) and about their colour, texture and shape. After searching around the site and gathering materials, the children then wove them into the wool/string to form a natural collage.

We discussed what weaving is and asked them to look at their clothing to see if any had been woven. We talked about different types of knots that were used to make the frames. The children used secateurs, scissors and also a tablet or camera to photograph their fantastic creations.

Home Activity:

Ask your child to look through their wardrobe to see if they can identify any items that have been woven. Go online and search together for weaving videos that will illustrate how the process of weaving works.
