Weekly Activities - Trolls!

Book of the week

The Three Billy Goats Gruff - Norwegian fairy tale.

Synopsis

"Who's that trip-trapping over my bridge?". Based on the traditional fairy tale The Three Billy Goats Gruff, this vibrantly illustrated story is sure to become a favourite in every home. The book contains lots of funny rhythm and rhyme to delight young children.

Weekly Activity

After reading ‘The Three Billy Goats Gruff’ at basecamp, we explained that we are going to make a bridge, just like we read about in the story. We encouraged the children to work together and make it as independently as possible, using loose parts from around the nursery such as long and short planks of wood, car tyres, rocks, stones and tarps. Once they had made their bridge, the children needed to test it to see if it was strong and stable enough to hold them. Everyone took turns walking over the bridge and trying out different ways of moving. The practitioners then lead the re-enactment of the Three Billy Goats Gruff story which all the children loved acting out.

Afterwards, we encouraged the children to make troll faces using water, mud, clay and natural resources and also troll masks using cardboard, wool, leaves, googly eyes and sticks.

Aims and Objectives

  • Collaborate with others to manage large items, such as moving a long plank safely

  • Develop manipulation and control, such as when moving tyres

  • Use their imagination as they consider what they can do with different materials

  • Explore various natural materials

  • Explore and respond to different natural phenomena in their setting

  • Re-enact a story
