The children were asked to join in with Spoty Hat's fun game this week which was learning about geometric shapes.

Spoty Hat wrote a letter to the children about where he had been during the holidays and how much he missed the nursery and the children. He prepared a game for them to play. The game consisted of finding the hidden items around the nursery. Each child would have their own one pre-prepared and each item had a name tag attached to it. The name tag together with a folded piece of paper was bound on a pencil with some string. The children needed to search for the items and then identify their own name (if they were older) or identify the first letter of their name (if they were younger). They then took their items over to the draft table. Once unfolded, they needed to join the series of dots using the pencil in order to discover the hidden geometric shape.
This activity is designed to help the children gain a better understanding of numbers, the order of numbers, various simple geometric shapes, which direction clockwise and anticlockwise are as well as gaining a wider knowledge of the letters of the alphabet, in particularly, the lower case letters of the child’s name. The children will need to work together in order to find the hidden items and then they will need to find their own name tag so they can have their own personal item which will give them a great sense of satisfaction and achievement.
Teach your child to draw some other geometric shapes by plotting dots for them to join together. Try simple shapes for younger children such as a square, triangle or heart. For older children, introduce such shapes as a hexagon, kite or trapezium. Make sure you tell them the name of the shapes they are drawing and then as a fun game, see if they can spot any of the shapes they've drawn in general household objects. This will help to reinforce their recognition of the shapes and also the names of the shapes.
